“Time in nature is not leisure time; it’s an essential investment in our children’s health (and also, by the way, in our own).” ― Richard Louv, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder

(This class can be paired with the Friday class or not) Our forest program is child-centered, interest-led, and place-based. Parents that stay are asked to participate, engage and have fun. Children find their own learning rhythm and developmental stage through rocks, plants, trees, water and insects by means of direct, hands-on experiences.   Using inquiry-based teaching styles, we prompt children to ask “why” and foster the development of the child’s own critical thinking skills. Children spend a large portion of class time engaged in valuable unstructured play and sensory explorations. Natural environments inspire more creative play, improve concentration, develop problem solving skills, invite teamwork and cooperation, and improve gross and fine motor skills. Staff hold a secure container, creating a sense of belonging, awareness and connection.

An introduction for children and adults to our local wilderness treasures.  Through exploration and play we will deepen our sensory awareness and connections with nature, our child and each other. Adults get to enjoy one on one time with their child, observe your child’s play with other children, and time to relax and let their own inner child loose. Developmental skills such as eye hand coordination, balance, peripheral vision, sense of smell, tactile exploration and curiosity are inevitable. Emphasis is on the children’s interests and abilities. We share the parenting experience and provide an opportunity for support and restoration.
